Biography:
PHAN CAM THUONG

Since 1984, Phan Cam Thuong, a teacher in the Hanoi College of Fine Arts' Department of the History of Art and Art Criticism, has co-authored several books about Vietnamese art history, as well as But Thap, the ancient Buddhist temple where he presently lives. Like Vietnamese intellectuals before him, Thuong practices calligraphy, paints, creates woodblock prints, and plays Chinese chess--the pursuits of a classical Asian scholar.

Thuong's prints provide a connection between the old and the new. Destined to spend many years of his youth living in a series of villages to escape the bombing of the cities of Vietnam, he developed a love for village ways and a great respect for the traditions of village life. These traditions, the legends of his country, and a strong belief in the teachings of Buddhism, supply the inspirations for his work.
